Fish Identifier — How It Works
Upload a photo — or take one with your phone camera. The AI analyses the shapes, colours and patterns and compares them against a database of over 385,000 marine species. Within seconds you get the most likely species with a confidence score, plus ranked alternatives when the AI hesitates. Each result includes the scientific name, common name, taxonomy (species → family → order → class), a Wikipedia summary in your app language, and — when available — the IUCN Red List conservation status. Your photo is used to compute the identification then discarded; no image copy is kept on our servers and no location metadata is extracted.

What kinds of animals can it identify?
Any marine species covered by our 385,000-species database: fish (bony fish and sharks), cephalopods (octopus, cuttlefish, squid), reptiles (turtles, sea snakes), crustaceans, molluscs, nudibranchs and coral. Freshwater species are also covered. Blurry photos, back-lit shots or animals mostly hidden by structure lower the confidence — a clear side profile works best.
Is my photo stored?
No. The photo is used to compute the identification and then discarded. We keep no image copy on our servers, and no EXIF or location metadata is extracted or logged.
How accurate is the AI?
Very accurate on well-photographed, unobstructed subjects — often 90%+ confidence on classic species. Lower confidence on partial views, look-alike species (e.g. within the same genus) or animals underrepresented in the training set. When the AI is unsure it returns ranked alternatives so you can pick the right one yourself.
Do I need to be underwater to use it?
No. Any photo works — a screenshot from your dive log, a picture from a fish market, a photo of an aquarium specimen. The AI only looks at the shape and colour of the subject, not the surroundings.
